פרשת משפטים

In this week’s Parsha
we read about the laws pertaining to the ‘עבד
עברי’

‘Hebrew servant’ and the ‘אמה העבריה’ ‘Hebrew handmaiden’. The inner meaning of this
is, when a person, because of their sins is sold as a servant, the Torah
teaches us<![if !supportFootnotes]>[2]<![endif]> “ובשביעית
יצא לחופשי חינם…”  –
“And in the seventh (year) he shall go to freedom, without
charge”.  The Ari writes that this
is coming to awaken each individual, that there is an end to all of their
sufferings. That’s what the verse means when it says “יצא
לחופשי חינם”
– “He shall go to freedom, without charge”.

 

The Parsha
begins with the words<![if !supportFootnotes]>[3]<![endif]> “ואלא
משפטים”
– “And these are the judgments”. Rashi
explains that when the verse says “And these” it adds on to that which has
been stated previously. Just as those which have been stated previously (the
Ten Commandments), are from Sinai, so too these commandments that the Torah is
about to state are from Sinai.

 

If we look carefully into this week’s Parsha, we notice that there are eighty six verses
which have in them twenty three Mitzvos Aseh and thirty Mitzvos
Lo Tasah. Almost all of these Mitzvos
are Mitzvos of Bein
Adam L’Chaveiro, between man and his friend.  Remember that we learnt that all these
commandments in this Parsha were given at
Sinai just like the Ten Commandments. Besides for hearing the Ten Commandments
at Mount Sinai, the Jewish Nation also were told לעולם יהא אדם”” – “One should always be a
proper person”.

 

When we look at the Ten Commandments we
find that it is mainly teaching us to be a proper person. To be an honest
person, one who turns themselves away from bad. Not to
damage ones friend physically, mentally, or monetarily. This is what the Ten
Commandments are teaching us, to be a proper person. “אנכי
ד’ אלוקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים… לא תשא… זכור את
יום השבת… כבד את אביך ואת אמך… לא תרצח… לא תנאף… לא תגנב…
לא תענה ברעך עד שקר… לא תחמוד…”
– “I am Hashem
your God, Who took you out of the land of Egypt… You shall not take the Name of
Hashem, your God, in vain… Remember the Sabbath day
to sanctify… Honor your father and your mother… You shall not kill; you shall
not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness
against your fellow… You shall not covet…”

 

Sometimes we think that Mitzvos of Bein
Adam L’Chaveiro is easy. We think how hard is it
to just love everybody? Most people don’t interfere with our life so it’s easy
to love them. The truth is that the main challenge for a person with Mitzvos of Bein
Adam L’Chaveiro, is to love those people that do interfere with our
daily lives. That’s when it is hard to be a proper person and to fulfill
correctly the Mitzvos of Bein Adam L’Chaveiro.

 

One of Breslovs
great leaders in Uman, Rav Shimshon Burski, was once asked
by a Chasan on his wedding day, what should he
have in mind the first time he puts on his Tallis?
He answered; have in mind to be careful not to hit anyone with the strings of
the Tallis when you put it on.

Chazal teach us, “A
person must swear before his Neshomah comes
down to the world, that he or she will be a Tzadik
and not a Rasha.” Rav Levi Yitzchok Bender asked
why is it that we make a person swear two things, by swearing that he or she
will be a Tzadik then they obviously
will not be a Rasha? Rav Levi Yitzchok
explained, that there are two different swears a person must swear. The first
swear is that he or she will be a Tzadik, a
righteous person. The second swear is that he or she will not be a Rasha with their Tzidkus,
meaning that one shouldn’t be a wicked person with their righteousness. Rav Levi Yitzchok would say in
Yiddish, “דיין צדקות זאל נישט נעמען
ביי איהר קיין טרערן!”…
(היזהר והישמר
שהצדיקות שלך לא יוציא מאשתך דמעות!…).
– “One must be
careful that their righteous acts should not cause ones wife to cry.”

 

The truth is that a person’s Shalom Bayis depends on the way he acts with his friends. One
must be a Mentsch. If a person is a Mentsch then he will have the ability to have
the proper recognition to constantly be attentive and listening. He will also
be able to give encouragement and consolatory to his wife, at every hard time.
A person must have the ability to listen to his wife when she is going through
tough times. A person also must be careful not to make his wife’s life harder;
he has to try to make it easier.

 

A person must be careful to be a Mentsch. A person must enable himself to
listen to and understand his wife. A husband must be like the Kosel Hamaaravi to
his wife. She should feel that by this wall to she has the ability to pour her
heart out. A wife must be like the Kosel Hamaaravi to her husband. He should feel that he has
the ability to pour out his heart to his wife.

 

When a person is careful to be a Mentsch when around friends and his wife,
then a person will merit having long blessed years, and generations of good
people after him. Only this promises the lasting of faith from Mount Sinai to
all future generations.
