Australians are earning hundreds of dollars every week by offering pet-sitting services that are often priced cheaper than traditional kennel boarding for pets.

Online marketplaces are filled with advertisements from people who need someone to look after their pets when they go away.

Animal lover Violet Wang, 19, joined Airtasker year after doing pet setting jobs through other services as a side gig.

‘I actually work at a stable and at a call centre, so this is more like a side hustle that I enjoy and earns me a bit more money.’

Aussies are taking up pet sitting as a side hustle via online marketplaces such as Airtasker for extra cash

‘I love it. I love spending time with a lot of different breeds and different animals.’ 

Ms Wang revealed she had been completely booked out over the Christmas period as people went away on holiday.

‘A lot of families are going away and they obviously can’t take their pet, so it’s a high-volume period so I get booked out over Christmas.,’ she said.

‘There’s such a high demand now with people needing pet care.’

‘Airtasker is so much cheaper, I used to work for a pet resort and it’s so expensive. I find a lot of people go to Airtasker to try to find better deals.’

Sydneysider Nadiana Albistur is another pet sitter who began taking up the side gig for extra cash during the COVID pandemic.

‘I had free time during COVID, I had some extra time on my hands and wanted to earn some extra money,’ she said.

‘I enjoy pets and looking after them. I have had pets myself, but I don’t currently have a dog of my own.’

Ms Albistur said she noticed there were more people needing pet sitters at the beginning of the year as they went back to work or study after the holiday period

‘I love the company of them, being able to play with them, take them to the dog park. 

‘I like sending updates to the owners so they know their pets are okay and just seeing that the pet parents and grateful that their pets are in good hands.’

Ms Albistur said she noticed there were more people needing pet sitters at the beginning of the year as they went back to work or study after the holiday period.

‘They want their pet to have company while they’re out,’ she said.

‘It’s so unaffordable to send pets to boarding places. I think it’s why people go to Airtasker.’

Fellow Sydneysider Amy Indrawan, who has a two year old French bulldog and a beagle, was quoted a whopping $3000 for pet boarding over a three week period.

But she managed to find someone through Airtasker who agreed to look after her dogs within her budget of $700.

‘People were offering to pet sit my dogs at their own home while some were willing to pet sit at my house or even just check in, take them walks and feed them,’ she said.

Data has revealed there is a 52 per cent increase in the number of people using Airtasker for pet sitting over the past six months

‘I’ve used Airtasker on three different occasions and all three times I have found someone reliable and trustworthy to look after my fur babies and what I love most is I can determine how much I am willing to pay for pet minding.’

Ms Indrawan said she was astonished to find out some pet boarding places were charging even more than what childcare centres were charging to look after people’s children.

Prices for pet boarding for dogs are in excess of $100 per day during the holiday season, while childcare fees cost parents an average of less than $100 per day following the government rebate.

There has been a 52 per cent increase in the number of people using Airtasker for pet sitting over the past six months, according to data from the online marketplace.

The busiest month for pet sitting tasks on the site is January during the holiday period.
